Finest Grand Burl Walnut Stationery Cabinet by Halstaff & Hannaford C.1860

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

About as good as they get, and a model I have never seen before, the reason will become evident.

A grand size, measuring 16 1/2 x 9" x 10 3/4" tall. The box is made from wonderful Burl Walnut with it's rich dark Cognac colour with a bright patina and is smothered in the finest quality brass mounts, the two central mounts on the doors are engraved with a very regal original family Armorial Crest.

The doors open to reveal a fully fitted interior with the right hand side door fitted with a walnut framed ceramic writing slate; the left-hand door with a memo panel for cards, notes etc. The box retains it's original finest quality leather Berry's Patent of London inkwell and vesta.

The very special element is the wonderful lift up section to the back where the calendar is which comes up and clicks into place for two large compartments for small books or stationery. The brass supports each side can be released and the back panel then can be stored back into the rear section of the box.

Underneath is the drawer which contains the writing slope or lap desk, retrieved by using the flush brass military handle. The back of the slope has a removable pen tray and space for two more inkwells. The gold tooled Burgundy leather is original all cross-banded in Tulipwood with it's red stripes. This then unfolds again to reveal a double writing slope, again with it's original leather. The top section opens to reveal the old worn original label for the top box maker Halstaff and Hannaford of Regent Street, London.

William Halstaff started his business in 1825 at 68 Margaret Street, Cavendish Square, London, later moving it in 1838 to 228 Regent Street, London as Halstaff & Co. In 1842, William Halstaff went into partnership with Thomas Charles Hannaford and the business became known as Halstaff & Hannaford. They mutually dissolved their partnership in 1858, however, the business continued trading under their name until 1898. In the same year, the business name was changed to Halstaff & Co, and it remained at the 228 Regents Street address until its final closure in 1908.

A fine, fine box in superb condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
