Antique Silver Fusee Pocket Watch, Ellesmere

An antique silver fusee pocket watch by Grosvenor of Ellesemere, together with silver pocket watch chain.

The watch has a fusee (chain driven) movement which is ticking away nicely and the time keeping is good to within around five minutes over 24 hours. A winding key is included. The movement is signed Grosvenor, Ellesmere, together with a serial number. The movement is protected by an inner fitted dust cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks in both of the case backs for London 1873. There are areas of unevenness to the case, and some wear to the patterning, but overall the condition is very acceptable for a piece of its age. The case back does not quite shut 100%; there is a slight gap, just enough to fit a single piece of paper into so acceptable.

The lens is a later plastic replacement which is in good condition.

The exquisitely detailed silver dial has rose gold coloured Roman numerals, a central floral design and blued steel hands for both hour, minute and subsidiary seconds. There is a little marking to the dial but overall it is in lovely condition.

The watch comes with a silver pocket watch chain, 30cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The chain is late Victorian. The clasp is a non-silver later replacement.
