Exceptional George III Mahogany Gainsborough Chair C. 1760

One of the finest Gainsborough chairs on the UK market, this exceptional example is completely original, in superb condition and of superior quality.

Newly upholstered in a Chinoiserie old gold silk (woven by the Gainsborough Silk Company which faithfully reproduces 18th Century fabrics from small pieces of rare originals that they source).

This chair has so many of the most sought after elements of Gainsborough chairs. It is perfectly proportioned, retains its original spandrels and original solid brass casters. The solid mahogany frame has developed a lovely warm colour and the frame is completely original throughout (I inspected thoroughly before recovering) and it is tight and not wormed. Minor superfical dings consistent with age and use and all part of the patina. The tip of one back leg has a small professional 19th century repair, not affecting structure and not at all noticeable.

The serpentine seat rail is mirrored by the serpentine shaped back and the arms are slightly outswept, having carved open flower heads at the elbows and lovely channel carved reeding which accentuates the flowing lines, matching reeding to the front legs
