A Very Fine Victorian Games Compendium

19th century
Description

A particularly good example of a mid-Victorian GAMES COMPENDIUM, designed and made by the famous firm of Betjemann and retailed by Payne & Co of Bond Street (London).

The beautifully figured burr walnut case is mounted with gilded "Gothic" strap-work, and inset with 'Tiger's Eye' semi-precious cabochon-cut stones.

The lid opens to reveal the contents which include: *a fine chess and backgammon board * full set of red-and-white bone chess pieces * full set of red-and-white draughts/backgammon pieces * gilt Cribbage and Bezique score boards *twin ivory and ebony whist markers and the full set of six original dice and eight gilt marker pegs.

Below the lift-out tray are various packs of playing cards; rule books; pair of ebony shakers and complete set of dominoes. An excellent compendium in good condition.
