19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

My silversmith has meticulously dismounted this wonderful and unusual double tabletop Coaster in the form of a cart. It needed professional cleaning, the woods were dry and required wax polishing, it now looks quite wonderful.

The wheels turn when the cart is pulled along the centre of the table, the kind of Novelty the Victorians simply loved. Perfect for wine, champagne or decanters (the aperture measuring 4 3/4" in diameter).

Each of the coasters unscrews for easy cleaning, each marked Maple and the underside of the carriage is marked Maple London, dating it to around 1890.

Superb condition, measuring 15 3/4" in length including the handle x 6 1/2" wide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wine coaster carts, also known as bottle wagons or decanter trolleys, originated in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to transport wine and champagne across formal dining tables without marking the wooden surface. The wheeled design allowed guests to pass beverages smoothly down the length of the table during dinner service.

Victorian wine coaster carts were typically crafted from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver. They featured cast spoked wheels, drawn wire frames, and lathe-turned wood or velvet-lined bases to cushion glass bottles and prevent slippage.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature makers hallmarks or makers marks stamped on the underside, period-appropriate cast jointing, and functional wheeled mechanisms. Visible signs of natural age include soft copper or brass show-through where the silver plating has thinned over time.

An antique silver wine cart can be styled on a sideboard, bar cart, or as a dining table centrepiece. It functions effectively as a decorative serving holder for spirits, wine, or champagne during formal gatherings.

Clean silver plated items using a specialized silver polish applied with a soft microfibre cloth, washing gently in warm soapy water afterwards. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or automated dishwashers to protect the delicate outer layer of silver plating.
