English William IV Travelling Writing Box in Rosewood & Satinwood C.1830

Description

A wonderful and most unusual writing box or lap desk, dating to the William IV era, around 1830.

This attractive box is made from a combination of Rosewood and Satinwood, with an appealing and decorative parquetry border to the top and front made from these two exotic timbers.

The top is inlaid with a brass shield-shaped cartouche with a complimentary escutcheon which houses the working key.

The box opens to reveal the fitted box with a leather writing surface with gold embossed tooling, beneath is storage for stationery or letters.

There is a lidded compartment for pens, nibs, sealing wax and the like, next to this is the original inkwell. The pen and stationery are not included in the sale.

Excellent condition, this fine box measures 9 7/8" x 7 1/4" x 2 7/8" while closed.
