A fine oil on board depicting an ebonised chair. The scene is post-impressionist in style and reminiscent of some Bloomsbury group work. The colours are bright and lustrous and counterpoint beautifully with the black chair. The composition is also technically adept with the chair of to one side and its shape echoed in that of the open trunk behind. The work is unsigned and it is most likely a piece from one of the great art schools. The painting is mounted in a a modern bespoke hand-painted frame. C.1940.
