About the Artist
He became a painter after first working as a pottery designer and a lithographic apprentice.

He exhibited his first exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery in 1888 with later exhibitions at the Royal Cambrian Academy and the Walker Gallery. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 to 1945 and was elected to the Royal College of Art and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1916.

A versatile painter, Bowen is known for his paintings of Yorkshire landscapes, flowers and still-life in both oil and watercolour. Spending many summers in Robin Hoods Bay, Bowen was elected a member of Staithes Art Club in 1904. His work is exhibited in galleries in Leeds, Rotherham and Rochdale and Harrogate as well as the Hepworth in Wakefield and museums in Bradford and Kirklees.
