Description

A small mahogany Chippendale Style breakfront bookcase by James Shoolbred. The upper section with a breakfront cornice having Greek Key moulding and a blind cut fretwork frieze, laid onto flamed mahogany veneers. The four astragal glazed doors open to reveal adjustable mahogany shelves and with traditional individually glazed panels with beautifully figured flamed veneers. The lower section again of breakfront outline with a solid mahogany top and a gadrooned carved border above twin raised flame veneered mahogany panelled doors enclosing shelving and flanked by three mahogany lined drawers to each side with fine quality brass circular drawer pulls, the drawers with finely cut dovetails. Supported on six acanthus carved cabriole legs with claw and ball feet and bearing the original manufacturers label Shoolbred & Co. English circa 1900-1910

The name of James Shoolbred & Co is highly respected among admirers of Aesthetic Movement furniture in Lancashire and Cumbria. Their antique desks, Victorian dining chairs and antique marquetry furniture were produced for wealthy households up to 1931. A particularly fine example of James Shoolbred antique marquetry furniture – an ornate piano by designer Henry Batley – is on display at the V & A museum, London.

Established in the 1820s, James Shoolbred’s Tottenham Court Road company began life as a drapers. It began supplying textiles to the furniture trade, and expanded into the stores either side, branching into interior design. By the 1870s, the company was designing and manufacturing its own furniture.
