Japanese Carved Panel of the Goddess Benzaiten C.1880.

19th century
Description

Meiji period Japanese carved wood, ivory and lacquered panel c.1880. Depicting the buddhist goddess Benzaiten descending through clouds seated on a fabulous scaly dragon and playing a traditional three string instrument. Carved ivory head and hands to the goddess and beautiful gold lacquered detail to her costume. The dragon has a blue glass eye. Presented in an associated but contemporary lacquered wooden frame with gold detail and two catches in the top edge allowing the panel to be easily removed. Very good condition with just a couple of small areas of damage chiefly to the dragon’s whiskers.

Dimensions: width 20½", height 25", depth 1".
