Set of Six Antique Victorian Balloon Back Dining Chairs by Charles Roodhouse (6)

19th century
Description

A super original set of six Victorian walnut balloon back dining chairs by Charles Roodhouse and dating to 1860. With a waisted rounded back and flower detail to the cross rail, these have serpentine fronted seats and stand on cabriole legs.. The seats have at some point been reupholstered in a soft green jacquard fabric with complimentary cording and braiding. Most chairs still retain their Charles Roodhouse label which notes their number, ‘workmans’ name and dates them to March 1860.

These are in very good solid condition with no wobbles, one had a repair in 1971 and was labelled at the time, one has lost a stamen to a flower on the cross rail, and one has some shrinkage to the join in the toprail but still feels firm. The upholstery seems to have been relatively recently done but there are some watermarks to the fabric. The wood has a lovely colour and patina and has been waxed to a shine.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more photos as we are limited in the number we can upload.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the nineteenth century, the balloon back chair features an open curved backboard resembling an inflated balloon, typically accompanied by turned or cabriole legs and an upholstered seat.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring traditional joinery and upholstered seats finished with damask, silk, or velvet fabrics.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-carved detailing, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, original stamps or makers marks on the seat rails, and natural wear consistent with historical craftsmanship.

Victorian dining chairs can be integrated alongside contemporary timber dining tables to create a curated contrast that balances classical proportions with modern interior design.

Preserve timber finishes by applying a natural beeswax polish along the grain annually, avoiding direct sunlight or high heat sources, and gently cleaning upholstered seats to remove dust.
