Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Almost certainly by Betjmann (though not signed), this beautiful box is veneered in finely figured burr walnut and is mounted with "Gothic" brass strap work and matching escutcheon all of which retains its original bright gilding.

The box opens to reveal the beautifully fitted interior, lined in red leather and blue "watered" silk, complete with engraved oval gilt brass cribbage and bezique boards inset within the lid. Below are various contents which include: dice; pegs; shakers; markers and three sets of later playing cards which commemorate a) Queen Victoria's 50th Jubilee (1887); b) her 60th Jubilee (1897) and c) King Edward the Seventh's Coronation (1902).
Gilded hinges; lock and the original gilded key. Gorgeous!
