Large 18th Century Engraving James Basire Antiquities of Athens 1 of 7 Roman Gladiators

Description

I do have seven of these engravings so if you are interested in any more let me know. Large Original 18th Century Engraving of the Antiquities of Athens by James Basire of Bacchus and Tyrrhenian Pirates. The engraving appears to be from Chapter IV, the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. They show reliefs on the Lysicrates monument illustrating the story of the Tyrrhenian pirates.

Four generations of Basires were engravers. The elder James Basire (1730-1802) became known as an engraver of architecture and was employed on the first volume of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett's classic book The Antiquities of Athens (1762). He traveled in Italy the following year, and around that time became Engraver to the Society of Antiquaries.

This engraving would look stunning framed and measures 22" by 15.5". In very good condition considering the age.

Please view my other interesting items.

Many thanks

Karen
