A Victorian English Oak Silver Chest in Very Good Condition.original Trays and Lining. Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

A very fine english oak silver chest complete with the original trays, baize and hand marbled paper lining. The chest is steel bound and has an inset engraved brass plate naming the owner.

These chests have normally been much abused in life and have usually lost their fittings. These are all intact but can be easily lifted out to provide a beautiful and characterful storage chest. The sturdy iron handles are perfect and the chest has the original working lock with key. The plate bearing the name 'simpson' adds to the appearance of this fine chest.

Sometimes these pieces are so huge that size limits their practicality, this one is a very useful size,

Dimensions as follows,

Width. 32 inches.

Height. 23.5 inches.

Front to back. 20 inches.

The top of the chest is bowed as usual but the 'bow' is not so great as to prevent the top being used as a coffee table. The chest is very strong and would happily take the weight of a person if it were to be used as a seat.

These pieces were used to transport the family silver from town to country house and back. Often wealthy families would leave london in the summer when conditions became intolerable and move to their country house for more pleasant air and surroundings. It was essential to 'keep up appearances' so the family silver came too, not only to be used but to protect it in their absence from town.

A good looking and practical antique and limited in supply.

All questions are welcome.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
