Exceptional Medieval Revival Wardrobe by William Scott Morton & Co C.1880.

19th century
Description

Important signed four door medieval revival wardrobe by the celebrated Edinburgh interiors company William Scott Morton & Co. Probably best described as Gothic or Medieval Revival it is an extraordinary and exuberant conglomeration of styles in black walnut with mahogany and satin birch door panels. A massive carved cornice with turned finials over Gothic carved figures representing the arts of music, architecture, literature and painting. The top panels in each side door are decorated with Romanesque profile portraits of the composers Gioachino Rossini and Daniel Auber. Whilst those on the center door carry beautiful hand painted scenes of exotic birds against golden ground. The doors are flanked with turned columns each beautifully carved with different leaves and fruit.

The interior features hanging space either side of a central press fitted with slides and drawers retaining their original gilded brass handles.

Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied.

The hand painted panels are signed Wm Scott Morton & Co though it is believed the wardrobe may well have been commissioned by them from the celebrated English cabinet makers Gillows of Lancaster.

Dimensions: width 94?, depth 31?, 97?.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
