John Joseph Cotman 1814-1878 the River Yare and Norwich

Description

John Joseph Cotman was a key member of the Norwich School of artists. The second son of John Sell Cotman John Joseph displayed a wonderful eye for colour and was a superb draughtsman. His pictures are stylish and bear the test of time very well.

John Joseph suffered from deep boughts of depression and difficult manic episodes which stretched is family and friends to the limit. He drank heavily and sadly developed tongue cancer and had the tongue removed, which must have bee horrendous.

This picture is from the hills above Whittlingham Lane just outside Norwich. It looks back along the river Yare to where Whittlingham Broad is situated. The picture shows brilliantly the Norwich skyline, including; the Cathedral, the Castle and Colmans Factory, Whittlingham Hall.

The river snakes its way through the picture with wherries dotted along its length. The cottages I believe are both still in place.

The picture has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. It is signed and dated Oct 1867
