A wonderful woodland scene showing all the characteristics of the Barbizon School artist Henri Harpignies. The Barbizon School took their lead from the Suffolk artist John Constable, who was painting from life landscapes. In England this was unfashionable but was warmly greeted by the French. Even the Haywain Constables most famous works was sold to a Paris art dealer when it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy. The Barbizon School bridge the gap between Constables realism and the French Impressionists. The Barbizon School are named after the small town south of Paris which acted as the focus for the group of artists.
 
The picture is unsigned, but has the palette and composure of Henri Harpignies and key member of the Barbizon School. The picture is title Ville d'' Avray which is a small town south of Paris around thirty miles from Barbizon.
