Marylebone Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The top is twisted around up to the point where the envelope part lifts up slightly in the middle, enabling the flaps to be flipped open & to rest on the corner edges which support their weight. It's a very clever mechanism, which seems to be unique to these card tables made in the late Victorian & Edwardian period. This cad table has many other decorative features. There are insets inside the flaps which show when opened that I think were designed for holding money or chips & they seem to be lined in maple or satinwood. The playing surface is baize lined. The inlaid tapered legs have original porcelain casters & there is a platform underneath that's joined by stretchers. There is also a drawer with original brass handles. Please enlarge all the images, because there are so many interesting features.
