It is Rococo in style with boldly modelled, sweeping acanthus and 'C' scrolls to the waisted case. It features an exquisitely detailed figure of the Greek goddess Athena seated to the top, marking the passage of time on a sundial. Athena is the goddess of heroic endeavour, wisdom, justice and the arts. The front and sides have fretted sound panels allowing the sound of the large, sonorous bell to the heard.
The very large dial is enamel on copper with separate minute ring and original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The bezel is fitted with convex glass.
The stunning French movement is by Vincenti and is the large, square plate version of the Pendule de Paris movement with rack striking. The Vincenti mark is on the backplate. It is of superb quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a large bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!
Condition of the case is excellent, beautifully clean and bright, there is some wear to the gilding and some surface pitting / marks. The dial is also in excellent condition just a slight chip next to the left hand winding hole. We have replaced the fabric behind the sound frets. This is a stunning clock of unusually large size, impeccably prepared and tested in our workshop, ready for your to display and enjoy.
