Antique English Brass Postal or Letter Scales - Reg. Number for 1886

Description

A very handsome pair of desk-top postal scales, the heavy cast base is made from English brass with a central pierced or reticulated panel and standing on four scroll feet.

The balance is marked Warranted Accurate and the right-hand pan is engraved with the postal rates of the time. There is a lovely set of original stacking weights to the front.

The underside is signed by the maker "Townshend & Co". of Earnest St, Holloway Head, Birmingham A quality foundry making domestic metalwork such as tableware for luxury retailers. This set is lucky enough to have an English design registration number which allows us to date it to 1886.

Excellent condition, with a footprint measuring 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" and standing 2 3/4" tall.
