Gents 1950s Smiths De Luxe Wrist Watch

A gents 1950s Smiths De Luxe wrist watch.

This model of watch was used in the Fuchs Antarctic expedition of 1954 and was sold as part of the Everest range of watches by Smiths around 1953.

This particular watch has a hand-winding movement, stamped Made in England, 27 CS. It is ticking away nicely and the time keeping is good to within around five minutes over 24 hours.

The watch measures 32.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The main body of the case is chrome plated; there is a little rubbing to the plate and some marking but overall the condition is good for a 1950s piece. The screw-on case back is stainless steel; there are some scratches. Although the back states that the watch is waterproof, it should not be treated as such.

The lens is in very nice condition.

The dial is signed Smiths De Luxe, 17 Jewels, Made in England. The dial has darkened with age but it has a fabulous vintage look with original hands, red centre seconds hand and an outer minute track.

A new black leather strap has been fitted.
