Regulator Style Longcase Clock by Brown of Edinburgh

19th century
Description

An excellent Regulator style Scottish longcase clock with exceptional fiddle back mahogany veneers.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and with a round silvered brass dial showing seconds, date, Roman numerals, matching blued steel hands and the makers name and place or work engraved across the centre of the dial. The dial framed within a gilt wooden sight ring. The mahogany case of desirable proportions and featuring heavily figured fiddle back veneer to the long trunk flanked by canted corners. The plain base features a single plinth and to the pediment, the very commonly used and popular architectural top.

Note: There is a Charles Brown listed as working at number 4 Bristo Street, Edinburgh in 1850. He is also listed as a Watchmaker in the 1851 census, living with 5 children, married and had 3 men working for him.
