Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Within the solid carved walnut wavy-edged rope twist gallery is a rising panel, accessed by a brass push-button underneath, which when removed, reveals a shallow tray for planting crocus bulbs or similar.
Width: 20ins; Depth 15.5ins; Height: 31ins (51 x 39.5 x 78.75cms)

Originally intended to plant crocus or similar small bulbs, the idea was to plant the bulbs in the shallow tray below, leaving them dormant beneath the panel. This was removed some days before a ball or important party, so that they were in full bloom in time for the important occasion. Perfect to use today as a wine or side table ~ with a charming difference!
