Atropos Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.
historically only made in zanzibar by local craftsmen.

This brass bound chest has been in storage for many years but has responded beautifully to a general clear wax and buff. The rich patina and subtle colour of the brass work is absolutely as it should be.

There are three drawers below and brass furniture comprising carrying handles and the brass front hasp.internally is the 'candle box' (often called such), which is more likely to have been used for the storage of items that needed protection from inquisitive mice, candles being one such commodity.
