Standing on carved and turned front legs, the stuff-over seats with original leatherette covering.

All original condition and a good mellow colour, no breaks or repairs. Stylish set of well-designed chairs of classical architectural influence ,which would work equally as well as side , hall or dining chairs.

Though unsigned or stamped , the chairs are almost certainly designed and manufactured by the prominent and prolific cabinet-makers 'William Smee & Sons' , Finsbury ,London. Many of their designs derived inspiration from antiquity and in a style known as "Modern Greek" .These chairs in particular draw stylistically from the style of the Ancient Greek "klismos" chair .The firm exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and similar designs for these chairs with the distinctive top-rails are shown in a series of the firms drawings held at the V & A Museum , London.
