Description

A Good & Rare Walnut & Burr Walnut Late Victorian Period roll top desk by Shannon Ltd. The upper section with a solid walnut rectangular top and dentil moulding above the "S" shaped walnut tambour front having acanthus carved detail to the sides, opening to reveal a large leather lined writing surface with a beautifully fitted interior. The lower section with an arrangement of nine solid walnut lined drawers with the original Art Nouveau inspired brass handles, and with two sliding leather lined "secretary boards". The drawer fronts are veneered in beautifully figured burr walnut, flanked by acanthus carved corbels. The pedestal drawers all locking with the Shannon patent locking mechanism, which means that when the tambour front is open the drawers are also open and when the tambour is closed and locked so are the drawers. The fielded panelled ends also veneered in wonderfully figured burr walnut which is repeated to the rear, showing the outstanding quality of this desk. This desk could be used free standing in the centre of the room. Retailed by the Shannon company Ltd, London but made in America circa 1890-1900
