Magnificent Cased Antique English Sterling Silver Magnifying Glass

1900 - 1920
Sold by Puckerings
Description

All original magnifying glasses are rarely found like this and with a case they come along once in a blue moon.

The handle is made from English sterling silver with a full English hallmark for Birmingham 1902, so very early Edwardian, the handle is simply stunning with a highly decorative ferrule joining the frame to the glass. The makers mark is also present for the well renowned silversmith, Adie & Lovekin Ltd.

The frame around the glass has a fine beaded decoration and is marked German Silver, this doesn't mean it is silver from Germany but the name for various alloys of copper, zinc, and nickel, sometimes also containing lead and tin. They were originally named for their silver-white colour.

The glass is totally original with fine scratches all-over but is still clear and totally usable with a good magnification.

The case has some wear but still in excellent shape with it's original blue lining.

A wonderful find in excellent condition. The box measures 9" x 4 1/2" the magnifier measuring 8 1/2" in length with a glass diameter measuring 4".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
