Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1800s.
This superb davenport retains all of its original features which include:

Original solid baluster gallery
Gilt-tooled leather writing surface
Satinwood lined interior; 2 small drawers
Original green gilt-pinned letter braidwork
Large satinwood slides to both sides
Hinged "secret" pen-and-ink drawer

Original pair of ink bottles; satinwood lids
Three mahogany-lined main drawers
Dummy drawers to the opposite side
Carved "melon" feet with original castors...
and the whole top slides forward for use.

John Herbert is fully recorded in the book" "Gillows of Lancaster & London" by Susan E. Stuart, Volume 2 page 248. Various references to him and his work can be found dated 1820-1840. A full description of Gillows davenports and pictures are detailed in Volume 2 pages 31-33.
The copy (below) of an original Gillows drawing, shows an identical davenport which was supplied to Ferguson & Co., furniture retailers in Oxford Street London, who were in partnership with Gillows.
