This is a lovely page turner, made by the silversmith Henry Matthews and assayed in Birmingham in 1898.
The silver handle is typically Victorian, ornately decorated with scrolls and flowers and it is engraved on one side with the italic initials JAG.
The handle is clearly hallmarked at its base and is firmly attached to the ivory sheath.
The ivory is in excellent condition - no rips or dents - just a natural curve that allows the whole item to lie flat on the surface, as the bulk of the handle would otherwise leave it wobbling.
The page turner is very long - 39cm in total.
A lovely piece of history.
