An Extremely Rare Set of 5 Silver Peter & Jonathan Bateman Teaspoons.

19th century
Description

The Holy Grail for collectors of Bateman silver. This rare find is a set of five matching silver teaspoons, bearing the maker's mark of Peter & Jonathan Bateman. Jonathan Bateman went into business with his Brother and struck a mark in 1790. This mark is only found for 5 months and only in 1790, due to Jonathan's untimely death. Peter then set up business with Jonathan's widow, Ann and the Bateman dynasty continued.

Due to the extremely limited time that this mark was struck, it has become most sought after by collectors, commanding interest even greater than the matriarch Hester Bateman (Jonathan's mother).

The spoons are in Old English pattern and have a crest engraved to the top front.

Condition :- Very good. There are no splits or holes and the bowl tips are good. A couple of the bowls have small ripples commensurate with age and use.

Hallmarks :- Clear and readable, with only slight softening.

Maker :- Peter & Jonathan Bateman.

Date :- London 1790.

Length :- 13.5 cms.

Declaration

Jeff Sims Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
