Rare Figural Black Forest Letter Scale C.1890 - Cow

Description

A stunning little postal scale dating to around 1890, obviously what makes this one very special and highly collectible is the Black Forest base, a charming carved cow standing on a naturalistic base. The carving is beautifully executed with some nice detail including the bell around it's neck.

The scale is made from solid cast brass which has been professionally re-polished to give a gleaming finish to the front. The pan is removable making it easy to travel with or store. The gauge is polished steel and the weight measurements on the front are of course grams as this example was clearly meant to remain on the continent. The scale is marked "Depose", meaning Registered, meaning the design had been registered.

A charming addition to a scale collection or a perfect desk-top accessory. Excellent condition, with a base measurement of 5 1/4" x 3 1/2" and standing 8" tall.
