This is a signed pencil drawing by Dame Laura Knight of her good friend Lillian Bayliss CH directing “Sword Fighting “at The Old Vic.,a subject Lillian Bayliss was particularly fond of.
It is the subject and location that makes this a particularly special drawing by Dame Laura Knight
The subject is her good friend Lillian Bayliss who turned Londons former Royal Victoria Music Hall Into the Old Vic,winning acclaim for her productions of Shakespeare at popular prices,her prayer being "Dear God please send me good actors -and cheap"
She went on to become the founding mother of The Royal Ballet and The English National Opera
She gave career changing breaks to many famous actors and dancers including Sir John Guilgud,Sir Lawrence Olivier , Sir Alec Guiness as well as new roles for Alicia Markova and. Dame Margot Fonteyn.
Lillian Bayliss died in 1937 just a year after her friend Laura Knight became a Royal Academician
Both received their honours from the Prince of Wales,standing in for his sick father George V,on March 31st 1929
Dame Laura Knight died in 1970
Both women are celebrated and honoured worldwide.
