Unusual Antique French Satinwood & Burr Thuya Wood Box C.1820

Description

A stunning and most unusual Louis XVIII era box dating to around 1820 made from elegant Satinwood, the shaped lid and plinth decorated with highly prized and striking Burr Thuya with it's tight curly grain and rich dark Cognac colour.

The lid is also beautifully mounted with cut steel pins and the original cut steel handle and escutcheon which houses a working tasseled key.

The lid is most unusual, the Satinwood panel of the lid is hinged and opens to reveal an original leather pouch on the underside of the lid to keep papers and letters (wear to the gusseted sides) The box has been re-lined in a hand marbelled paper, to create a fresh and usable interior. It would make a great storage box for papers, letters and photographs or an ideal sewing box; or simply enjoy it's beauty, it really is quite stunning.

Excellent condition, measuring 11 3/4" x 8 1/4" x 5 3/4" tall.
