W & H Twin Fusee Quarter-striking Bracket Clock.

19th century
Description

A superb example of these much sought after carved oak bracket clocks.

Made by the World renowned maker WINTERHALDER & HOFMEIER in 1899, this clock strikes the quarters with a double (Ting-tang) strike on seperate heavy blue steel gongs. It has one double strike on the first quarter, two on the half hour and three on the third. It strikes the number of hours on the hour with a different tone. All striking is very crisp with a good resonation.

The striking can be turned off if required by means of a STRIKE/SILENT pointer on the dial.

The 8 day, twin chain driven fusee movement is a credit to the maker. It has just been fully serviced by our BHI registered staff and carries a 12 month guarantee.

The square brass faced dial has an engraved silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals, gilded spandrels, matted centre and beautifully shaped hands. It has subsiduary dials for Fast/Slow and Strike/Silent.

The oak case retains its original French-polished finish with a deep, rich patina developed over the last 100 plus years. Its beautiful proportions are enhanced by moderate relief carvings to the front and the fretwork side opening doors with brass catches.

A trully remarkable clock in totally original condition and still retaining its own ctranked winding key.

Dimensions:

Height 17" (43cm)

Width 12" (12")

Depth 9" (23cm)
