Pair of C19th Italian carved serpentine marble 'Grand Tour' souvenir lions. Well-executed pair of lions depicting the Antonio Canova (1757-1822) originals sculpted from marble In 1792 for the monumental tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St.Peter's Basilica in Rome (see photo below). The sleeping lion is symbolic of the Popes moderation, whilst the vigilant lion represents his energetic work. The green serpentine marble has a rich colour and good figuring (being named 'serpentine' in its resemblance to snake- skin). Good condition with no damage or repairs . L 7" x H 4" x D 3". Italy c.1880
