Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the nineteenth century, Black Forest carvings became popular souvenirs for Grand Tour travellers. Craftsmen specialised in highly detailed realistic animal carvings, transforming functional everyday items such as inkwells, tobacco jars, and coat racks into sculptural works.

These inkwells were typically hand-carved from native Swiss timbers, predominantly linden wood or walnut. They frequently featured glass inset eyes for realism, brass hinges, and inner glass or ceramic ink pots to hold liquid ink.

Authentic pieces demonstrate sharp hand-chiseled tool marks rather than modern machine carving. They exhibit natural timber grain, a deep patination acquired over decades, inset glass eyes securely fitted into hand-cut sockets, and functional metal hardware appropriate to the period.

Novelty wooden inkwells function effectively as decorative sculpture on an office desk, mantlepiece, or library bookshelf. They add visual weight, rich timber tones, and historic character when paired with contemporary stationery or layered among hardback books.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to clean crevices without scratching the surface. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the wood grain, keeping the object away from direct sunlight, radiators, and excess moisture.
