A Very Fine 18th Century Bracket Clock

18th century
Description

A most impressive and particularly handsome George III BRACKET CLOCK by Thomas Hill of Fleet Street, LONDON.**

The case is delightful with its 'bell' top embellished with ormolu mounts and five original cast brass finials. To the sides are twin cast brass handles, whilst the canted corners that flank the front door, are mounted with cast brass and gilded caryatids.

The eight-day movement retains its original verge escapement, striking hours on a bell and repeating at will. The backplate is beautifully engraved, as is the pendulum bob. The dial features "rolling moon" in the arch; engraved & silvered chapter-ring; good cast spandrels and engraved signature in the arched top. There is also "Strike/Silent" activated by a lever at "III".

In full working order and guaranteed for at least two years.

** There are a number of makers by the name of Thomas Hill of London, though this is likely to be Thomas Hill of Aldersgate Street (very close to Fleet Street) who worked there from 1760-1784 (see Baillie page 153).

Declaration

Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1750s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
