Marylebone Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
If you enlarge the images you will see bits of red & white, plus the wood showing within the gilding. When this sofa was originally made back in the 1840's period, the frame would have been hand carved, then one or two layers would have been put on the frame before the final gilt finish was applied. Naturally, I didn't want to mess with this original finish, because it has a great look. All we did was re-cover it in a Swedish linen fabric, which is double piped. It's also feels like it has the original horse hair underneath the upholstery. The gilt show wood is really bold & so are the cabriole legs.
