Description

This fabulous Tekke Engsi (inner-Yurt door hanging) is of the rare variety - referred to as an 'animal-tree' engsi! These 'animal-tree' engsis all have similarities - the main madder-red border has a continuous vine pattern and at the base of the rug, the depiction of two totemic creatures standing each side of a 'tree of life'. This engsi too is very symbolic with 5 horizontal bands of double-headed sun-birds in the lower panel and 7 bands in the upper panel - 5s and 7s were magic cosmic numbers to these shamanistic nomads.

A truly wonderful rug made circa 1870.
