Museum Quality Antique French Military Style Decanter Box C.1810

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

This really is a one-off, not to be missed and an absolute joy. This magnificent campaign or military style box is made from Mahogany and is beautifully bound and inlaid with polished brass.

The front is inlaid with a brass shield-shaped escutcheon which houses the most magnificent original lock and key I have seen with it's quatrefoil shaped pin. Either side of the box is an inlaid brass flush campaign handle.

The top of the lid has a central inlaid cartouche engraved with a heraldic family crest, which appears to be Scottish with the motto "Vigilans Et Audax" (Vigilant and Bold) below a Scottish banner and topped with a Cockerel.

The box lid opens to reveal the original gold tooled leather lining on the inside. The interior is fully fitted with all the original linings, the top having a removable tray with six small cut crystal liquor glasses each measuring 1 7/8" tall with a rim diameter measuring 1 1/2" across.

There are six cut crystal decanters each engraved with the numbers 1 to 6, once these are removed you can see the gold embossed numbers on the leather under each decanter.

Each decanter is topped with a silver-gilt collar, top-notch and then each housing an intricately cut glass stopper. Each decanter stands 7 1/2" tall.

Superb condition (minor wear), this box is quite magnificent & early, dating to around 1810, so over 200 years old. The box measures 10 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 8".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
