19th.c. Tibetan Table with Dragon Base.

1900 - 1920
Description

Truly exceptional Oriental hardwood occasional table of interesting origin. A fabulous tripod base carved in the form of three long and scaly dragons supports a beautiful octagonal top carved with eight elephants around a large peacock set within a dense foliate ground. In very good original condition with minor damage to the nose of one dragon. According to provenance which accompanies the table it originates in Tibet and was brought back to this country in 1904 by a member of the British military ‘expedition’ to (or invaision of) Tibet led by Col Francis Younghusband.

Dimensions: width 29", depth 29", height 27".
