Magnificent English Sheraton Satinwood Shell Inlaid Knife Box - Converted to Stationery C.1790

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

Very hard to find in Satinwood and much more highly sought-after than the more commonly found examples in Mahogany.

This eighteenth century gem stands on three bracket feet and has been converted into a stationery box making it a very usable piece in the 21st century, over two centuries after it was made to hold cutlery.

The beautifully shaped frame is cross-banded in Tulipwood trimmed in fine Boxwood and Ebony stringing. The centre of the lid is inlaid with the original shell, there is also one on the inside of the lid.

The box comes complete with a working key and remains in superb condition. Some fine old grain cracks, made stable having been professionally re-polished. The box measures 9 1/2" wide at the back x 11 1/2" deep; standing 15 1/2" tall at rear and 11" high at front. The interior width measures 7 7/8" at widest (rear).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
