Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1900s.
This would have been an expensive piece in it's day, true quality.

Clearly a presentation piece with Equestrian / Hunting interest, the silver plaque to the top retains it's original engraving, presented for the Point to Point races to a horse called "Hampton" for 1901 - 1902 at a Hunt (I can't quite read which Hunt). Either side of the box has a heavy cast brass handle.

The box retains a working key, the lock is sprung so requires a press in with the key prior to turning. The box opens to reveal a fully fitted interior lined in Quarter Sawn Oak, again, a true sign of quality.

The front portion is a writing slope or lap desk and opens once more to reveal the writing surface with it's original gold embossed decoration. The top section opens to reveal space below to store stationery, letters, papers and photographs.

The section to containing the Coromandel pen tray and the two original gilded top inkwells is sprung and when the writing slope is folded and brought back upright, this section disappears into the base of the box, it springs out as the front panel is opened.

There are a variety of compartments and a bank of three drawers to the left topped with a leather trimmed slate. The full width compartment at the back retains the original leather portfolio / blotter.

To the front there are two brass framed compartments containing professionally re-created perpetual calendar cards and a set of "Engagement" cards.
A wonderful box in superb condition. 17 1/2" x 10" x 12" tall.
