Description
This is a very rare type of wall-hanging food cupboard, from the north of Wales. Such cupboards were placed near to the warmth of the hearth, with the fretted panels designed to allow the air to circulate but to keep unwanted intruders at bay! Although essentially utilitarian articles, the production of foodstuffs was a prestigious activity and this cupboard is an attractive and decorative piece of furniture. The fretted slats in the front are individually cut and of a dramatic design. As is often the case, the cornice, hinges, backboards, baseboards and internal shelf have been replaced at some point in the past. This useful and unusual cupboard is illustrated in Volume 2 of "Welsh Furniture 1250-190" as plate 801 Width: 46 inches (48 across cornice); 117 cms (122) Depth: 19.75 inches (21 across cornice); 50 cms (53.5) Height: 27.5 inches; 70 cms Items purchased can be stored and collected by mutual agreement, although we are always happy to help with delivery arrangements (just email us at info@welshantiques.com with your postcode or country & zip code to obtain a competitive quote).
