Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small table with multiple drawers mounted on cabriole or turned legs, originating in the 18th century. Popularised in American colonial furniture design, it served primarily as a dressing table or vanity table in bedrooms and parlours.

Colonial American lowboys were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, mahogany, and maple. Secondary woods inside drawers often included pine or tulipwood, secured with hand-cut dovetail joinery and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn wood marks, hand-cut irregular dovetail joints, cast brass backplates with bail handles, and authentic wear patterns on drawer runners and feet. The underside of the carcass and drawer bottoms generally show uneven hand-planed timber.

A lowboy functions as a versatile accent piece, suitable for placement in an entryway, hallway, or living area. Pairing the rich timber patination with minimalist lighting, contemporary art, or simple ceramics balances historic craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying and fading. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the natural finish.
