Description

A stunning quality mahogany inlaid Late Victorian inlaid writing table by Edwards and Roberts of London. Having a rectangular solid mahogany top cross banded in satinwood and ebony with a heart shaped inlaid motif to each corner and an inset black leather inset writing surface with gilt and blind tooled detail. With a central rectangular frieze drawer and two further mahogany lined drawers to each side and the knee hole having shaped corner brackets. The ends and reverse of the desk are beautifully finished and cross banded in satinwood, raised on square tapering supports terminating in brass ball feet, with harebell inlaid detail throughout, stamped by the makers Edwards & Roberts of London circa 1890

Dimensions: 48" wide x 22" deep x 30" high (knee hole 25" high x 19" wide)

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century.

They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.

Edwards & Roberts specialized in Marquetry, inlay and Ormolu.
