Bow Fronted Stick Barometer by Rubergall of London

19th century
Description

An exceptional bow fronted stick barometer by this Royal Instrument Maker.

The silvered brass scale calibrated from 28" to 31" with a sliding rack and pinion vernier of slim design and controlled with an ivory set key. The dial also engraved with weather indications and makers name and place of work engraved to the top of the scale. The full length thermometer to the main trunk calibrated in both Fahrenheit and Reaumur and with a mercury filled tube.

The desirable flat-to-the-wall mahogany case with excellent flame veneers to the bowed front and with swan neck pediment with bone paterea and an ornate brass pineapple finial. The base with an ebonised boxwood urn cistern, ebony mouldings, ebony inlay and brass cistern screw for transportation.

A highly desirable Georgian Instrument of the finest quality and design.

Note: Thomas Rubergall is listed as Optician and Mathematical Instrument Maker to the Duke of Clarence (later to become William IV) and he was also Optician to King George III.
