Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The top of the vesta has a textured finish which is where the matches would have been struck. The little hold to the top of the stirrup is where a lit match would have been place, supplying enough light to get to the top of the stairs, hence the name of these highly collectible items.

Another wonderful bonus with this particular piece is the English Registration Diamond shaped lozenge on the interior of the lid, allowing us to date it fairly accurately. This piece being registered 18th February 1875, making this a true Victorian example.
Excellent condition, the base measuring 2 3/4" x 1 3/8" and standing 3 3/4" high.
