Late 19th.c. Chinese Rosewood Chair.

Description

Unusual late 19th.c. Chinese carved rosewood side chair c.1890. As is typical of Chinese art the design is full of pointed symbolism aimed at bringing the owner of the chair a long and happy life. Note how the backrest frame and rear legs are carved to resemble sprouting bamboo symbolising resilience whilst the centre splat features a seal with tasselled chord over a deer, a symbol for longevity and prosperity, amongst foliage. Sitting on top of the backrest crouches the stylised form of a bat, the symbol for happiness and joy. Unusual round seat carved around the ege with further foliate detail on a very un-Chinese style (but original) turned front leg suggesting the chair could well have been made for the colonial British Chinese market. In very good untouched and original condition.

Dimensions: width 16½", depth 16½", height 37".

Year: c.1890.
