Small Late 18th Century Mahogany Bracket Clock

19th century
Description

ROBERT SHEARSMITH, LONDON*: a pretty and quite small late 18th century, perhaps very early 19th century mahogany BRACKET CLOCK in full working order.

The case is of mahogany, the arched top surmounted by the the original cast brass carrying handle, whilst the glazed door, flanked by cast brass corners, has an inner slip frame, also of cast brass.

The 8-day verge movement strikes hours on a bell, repeating at will via the pull cord to the right hand side. The engraved silvered dial is signed by the maker and features "Strike/Silent" in the arch. Full working order and guaranteed at least two years.

Dimensions: 15ins high excluding the handle and a little over 10ins wide at the widest point. (38 x 26cms). * Robert Shearsmith is recorded working in London 1817-1824 though this is likely to be a little earlier (his Father perhaps?) as the engraved silvered dial, and the verge escapement are both earlier features.

Declaration

Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1800s.
